    Subject: Security and Defence Policy of the State
    Form of study: Full-time
    Subject´s goals: Study of the subject is aimed at the introduction to the current security paradigm and explanation of its impact on the (Czech) state and its armed forces.
    Learning outcomes:
    • Knowledge:

    Graduate will know basic information about:

    • Security studies and trends in security research;
    • The role and importance of the armed forces for national security and promoting of the national interests;
    • Bases and shape of the Czech security and defence policy;
    • Security system and specialized state policies;
    • The position and tasks of the armed forces in ensuring the security of the Czech state and society.
    • Skills:

    Graduate will be able to:

    • Use basic security terminology;
    • Clarify the position and mission of the Czech Armed Forces;
    • Implement information concerning the armed forces into a wider political framework.
    • General competencies:

    Graduate will be eligible to:

    • Demonstrate basic political literacy;
    • Critically deal with specific information.
    Subject continuity: The subject precedes subjects “Economics of Defence and Security“, “Security Management” and follows the subject “Political Science and International Relations”.
    Conditions for successful completion of the course:

    The subject is completed with a credit, which can be obtained on the basis of semester essay and passing of the written test.

    Basic literature and recommended readings: Each theme has its own set of compulsory learning resources and additional readings.
  • Security of the state and approaches to security research

    Educational goals:

    • to explain the concept of (state) security, its development, content and understanding in the branch of security studies;
    • to introduce the genesis of the mentioned branch;
    • to outline the contemporary dominating approach to security research.
  • Security and defence as function and attributes of the state

    Educational goals:

    • to explain the role of the state in creation of rational security and defence policy;
    • to draw basic characteristics of a state in its function of security provider.
  • Behavioural models and approaches to national security

    Educational goals:

    • to outline the state´s approaches to its security;
    • to explain some of relevant terms (balance of power, security dilemma, etc.);
    • to introduce selected methods and models used for explaining of the specific behaviour of subjects of international relations.
  • National (security) interests and the role of armed forces

    Educational goals:

    • to introduce concepts of referent object and its importance for security policy;
    • to outline the role of armed forces in security of anarchic systém of the international relations;
    • to inform about historical development of state and its stance as sovereign unit in the system of international relations;
    • to define national interests and state interests, their division, articulation, and content.
  • Characteristics and trends in the security environment

    Educational goals:

    • to outline the basic characteristics of the current security environment;
    • to highlight selected trends and factors affecting the shape and nature of the security environment.
  • Position and involvement of the Czech Republic in the international security architecture

    Educational goals:

    • to explain main points of European security architecture;
    • to outline its development and internal relations;
    • to explain the involvement of Czech Republic into the international security architecture.
  • Institutional, legal and doctrinal framework of the Czech security system

    Educational goals:

    • to introduce main constitutional principles and elements of security system of Czech Republic;
    • to outline basic standards and legislative regulations of crisis legislation including internal and external state security.
  • Mission and tasks of the armed forces in the Czech political and security system

    Educational goals:

    • to present basic information about status of armed forces in the framework of democratic state;
    • present basic information about transition to democracy in Czechoslovakia and the role of army in this process;
    • present basic political attitudes to the building and use of armed forces.
  • Czech society and its relation towards ensuring the security and armed forces

    Educational goals:

    • to present results of opinion polls in the Czech Republic on issues of security, defence and armed forces.
