Subject: Political Science and International Relations Form of study: Full-time Subject´s goals: Study of the subject is aimed at the introduction to the bases of specific social science branches - political science and international relations. One of the goals of the subject is to explain their importance for military professionals. Learning outcomes: - Knowledge:
Graduate will know basic information about:
- The functioning of the political system of the modern democratic state;
- The position of the armed forces and their importance for the state and society;
- The nature and principles of functioning of the current system of international relations;
- International political context of contemporary armed conflicts;
- Development, mission, structures and activities of key elements of the contemporary security architecture.
- Skills:
Graduate will be able to:
- Clarify the place and role of the armed forces of the democratic state;
- To better understand the information regarding the current international political events;
- Include information concerning the armed forces into the wider political framework.
- General competencies:
Graduate will be eligible to:
- Demonstrate basic political literacy;
- Critically deal with specific information.
Subject continuity: Study of the subject prior to the study of subjects "History and traditions of the Czech Armed Forces" and "Security and defense policy of the state". Conditions for successful completion of the course: Personal presentation, written test.
Basic literature and recommended readings: Each theme has its own set of compulsory learning resources and additional readings. -

- to explain its nature, structure and historical development;
- to present the main political science schools and approaches to studying politics.

- to explain the issues tied to the extremist movements and their controversy in relation to the democratic character of the state;
- to explain main difference between extremism and radicalism and the level of their acceptance in society and in the armed forces.

- acquaint with basic characteristics of terrorism and its conceptualisation;
- characterize selected ties of extremist movements to terrorist groups and the reflection of ethnic, ideological and religious elements into contemporary asymmetric conflicts.

- to characterize the role of armed forces in different historical epochs of the existence of Czechoslovak and Czech state;
- to explain characteristics of contemporary status, tasks and use of Armed forces of the Czech republic.

- to outline opportunities and challenges in ensuring apolitical nature of the armed forces;
- to introduce basic models of the relationship between the military and society;

- to characterize the state and its foreign policy as a basic reference object of international relations;
- to briefly introduce the instruments of foreign policy;

- to provide basic information about the structure, instruments and activities of the Alliance.
