Topic:

Political extremism

Lecturer:

Mgr. Richard Stojar, PhD.

Introduction to the topic:

The word extreme comes from Latin and means: the most distant or the farthest. In political theory, this term refers to the position on the imaginary political scale that is furthest from the political center. Usually, however, extremism is understood as any ideology or activity that is directed against the existing political system as such and aims at its elimination and subsequent replacement by its own alternative. This alternative is expected to be undemocratic. Extremism can be very generally divided into right-wing (sympathy for movements or ideologies such as National Socialism, fascism or some forms of racism) and left-wing (communism, anarchism, strong and violent forms of environmentalism).
