Basic essay writing
Essays can have many purposes but the basic structure is always the same. An
academic essay is a piece of writing, which focuses on a particular issue, and is
determined by the title. It is not just a collection of facts but should develop and
display your powers of reasoning. An essay should be an exploration of ideas,
which you should define and develop in a logical way.

Very few people can write an essay without giving it some thought. You should
prepare a first draft, which you should return to with a critical eye at a later date if
possible. This not only allows you to pick up any grammatical errors or poor phrasing
but also enables you to detect more serious faults such as a lack of clear structure.
Try to rework the whole essay rather than bits of it.

To structure an essay effectively you need to work systematically through the
following areas.

Introduction and essay purpose
Finishing touches Thesis statement
Introduction and conclusion Essay outline
Body of essay
